Cloudy cold plunge water: causes and fixes
Cloudy water is the most common cold plunge problem. The good news: it's almost always fixable, and usually within 24 hours. This troubleshooting guide walks through every cause and solution.
Quick diagnostic
Before fixing, diagnose the cause:
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| White cloudy | High pH or calcium | Test and adjust pH to 7.2-7.8 |
| Green cloudy | Algae growth | Shock with chlorine, add PoolRX |
| Yellow/brown cloudy | Iron or metals | Add metal sequestrant |
| Gray cloudy | Low sanitizer, dirty filter | Add chlorine, clean/replace filter |
| Foamy cloudy | Body oils, soap residue | Add defoamer, shower before plunging |
The 5 main causes (in order)
1. Low sanitizer (most common)
Symptoms: Gray or off-white cloudiness, may have slight smell, water was clear a few days ago.
Cause: Chlorine level dropped too low, ozone schedule missed, or too many contaminants introduced (heavy use, sweat, sunscreen).
Fix:
- Test water with 5-way test strips
- If chlorine is below 1 ppm: add trichlor tablet or liquid chlorine
- Run ozone generator 30 minutes (longer if available)
- Run filter pump continuously for 24 hours
- Re-test next day — should be clear
2. Dirty filter
Symptoms: Cloudy despite good chlorine level, reduced water flow from return jets.
Cause: Filter cartridge clogged with skin cells, hair, oils, debris.
Fix:
- Inspect filter cartridge — if brown/grey even after hosing, replace it
- Hose off cartridge thoroughly (use spray nozzle, not just water flow)
- Soak cartridge in filter cleaner solution (optional but effective)
- If cartridge is 4+ weeks old, replace it ($5 for Intex Type A/K)
- Run filter pump 24 hours after cleaning/replacement
3. pH imbalance
Symptoms: White cloudy water, may have scaling on tub walls, sanitizer doesn't seem to work well.
Cause: pH above 7.8 (basic) causes calcium to precipitate out of solution. pH below 7.2 (acidic) can also cause cloudiness.
Fix:
- Test pH with 5-way test strips
- If pH above 7.8: add pH Down (sodium bisulfate) per package instructions
- If pH below 7.2: add pH Up (sodium carbonate) per package instructions
- Run filter pump 1 hour to mix
- Re-test — pH should be 7.2-7.8
- Cloudiness should clear within 2-4 hours
4. Body oils and soap residue
Symptoms: Foamy surface, cloudy water, slippery tub walls.
Cause: Body oils, sweat, sunscreen, deodorant, soap residue from showering.
Fix:
- Add pool defoamer (available at pool supply stores, $10)
- Shock with extra ozone (run 60 min instead of 30)
- Add enzyme cleaner (pool supply, breaks down oils)
- Always shower before plunging (30-second rinse is enough)
- If severe: partial drain and refill (25% of water)
5. Algae growth
Symptoms: Green tint, slippery walls, may have visible green/black spots.
Cause: Algae spores introduced from environment, low sanitizer, warm water.
Fix:
- Add PoolRX mineral algaecide to filter
- Shock with chlorine (raise to 5 ppm temporarily)
- Brush tub walls vigorously to dislodge algae
- Run filter pump 24 hours
- Vacuum or skim dead algae
- Test water — chlorine should be 1-2 ppm after 24 hours
The 24-hour clear water protocol
If your water is cloudy and you're not sure why, follow this protocol:
- Test water with 5-way strips (pH, chlorine, alkalinity, hardness)
- Adjust pH to 7.2-7.8 if needed
- Add chlorine if below 1 ppm (target 2-3 ppm temporarily)
- Clean or replace filter cartridge
- Run ozone generator 60 minutes (double normal)
- Run filter pump continuously for 24 hours
- Skim surface debris with skimmer net
- Re-test after 24 hours — water should be clear
If still cloudy after 24 hours, partial drain (50%) and refill with fresh water.
When to drain and refill
If cloudy water persists after 48 hours of treatment, drain and refill:
- Turn off all equipment
- Drain tub completely
- Clean interior with 10% bleach solution
- Rinse thoroughly
- Refill with fresh tap water
- Re-balance water chemistry
- Run ozone 30 min before first use
See our drain and refill guide for full instructions.
Prevention
To prevent cloudy water:
- Shower before every plunge (30-second rinse)
- Test water weekly with 5-way strips
- Run ozone 30 min × 3×/week
- Replace filter cartridge monthly
- Maintain 1-2 ppm chlorine residual
- Keep water at 50°F or colder (slows microbial growth)
- Use cover when not in use (prevents debris)
Troubleshooting gear
- 5-way test strips — Diagnose chemistry issues
- PoolRX algaecide — Treat algae growth
- Skimmer net — Remove surface debris
- Ozone generator — Sanitize without chemicals
- Filter pump — Keep water moving and clean
