Why this site exists
In 2024, the average commercial cold plunge cost between $5,000 and $12,000. At the same time, the science on cold exposure was exploding — Huberman, Attia, Wim Hof, and a wave of new research papers were driving mainstream awareness. The result: millions of people curious about cold therapy, but priced out by a market that treated a tub of cold water as a luxury good.
We started Plunge Craft because the actual engineering behind a cold plunge is not complicated. A food-safe vessel. A water chiller. A circulation pump. A sanitation method. A temperature controller. That's five components — none of them proprietary, none of them requiring an engineering degree to assemble. Yet the prevailing advice online was either "buy this $8K unit" or "fill a trash can with ice and pray." Neither is useful.
So we built the guides we wished existed when we started: detailed, photographed, costed, with real product links to gear that actually works. No affiliate-padded listicles. No vague "buy a kit" advice. Just builds you can follow with a screwdriver and a Saturday afternoon.
What we cover
Plunge Craft focuses on three interconnected pillars of home thermal therapy:
- Cold exposure: stock tank builds, chest freezer conversions, chiller selection, water chemistry, temperature protocols, breathwork, and safety.
- Heat exposure: infrared sauna blankets, portable sauna tents, sauna domes, sauna hats, and DIY heat protocols.
- Contrast therapy: the science of hot-cold cycling, protocol design, and how to combine your cold plunge and sauna for maximum recovery gains.
We also publish deep comparisons (chiller vs ice, ozone vs chlorine, stock tank vs chest freezer, infrared blanket vs tent) because these are the decisions that make or break a build.
Our editorial principles
Plunge Craft operates under four strict editorial principles. These aren't marketing claims — they're the rules we follow when writing every single page on this site.
1. We only recommend what we'd use ourselves
Every product linked on this site has been checked against a 4-gate filter: 4.3+ star average rating, 100+ reviews, Amazon Prime eligibility, and verified specs. We refuse to recommend cheap unbranded chillers with no warranty, ozone generators with safety concerns, or any product with repeated "stopped working after 2 weeks" complaints. If a product fails these gates, we don't link to it — even if the commission would be higher.
2. We disclose every affiliate relationship
Plunge Craft is reader-supported. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission from Amazon Associates at no extra cost to you. We disclose this on every article page, on the homepage, and on our dedicated affiliate disclosure page. We never accept paid placements or sponsored content.
3. We update content when the facts change
Products get discontinued. Chillers get firmware updates. New research gets published. Every article on this site has a "last updated" date, and we review content quarterly to ensure accuracy. If you spot something outdated, email us and we'll fix it.
4. We don't capture your data
No newsletter. No lead magnets. No popups asking for your email before you've read two sentences. Plunge Craft is monetized exclusively through display advertising and Amazon affiliate links. That's it. You can read every page on this site without giving us a single piece of personal information.
Who writes this site
Plunge Craft is written by a small editorial team with backgrounds in mechanical engineering, sports recovery, and consumer hardware testing. We are not medical professionals — none of our content should be taken as medical advice. Always consult a physician before starting any cold exposure protocol, especially if you have cardiovascular conditions, hypertension, or are pregnant.
Our content is reviewed against published research and cross-referenced with practitioner guidelines where applicable. We cite sources inline whenever a claim has a specific scientific basis, and we explicitly label opinion or anecdotal content as such.
How to get started
If you're new to cold exposure entirely, start with our Start Here roadmap — it covers the basics and links to a 4-week ramp-up protocol. If you already know you want to build a plunge, go straight to our master DIY build guide. And if you're specifically shopping for a chiller, our chiller buyer's guide is the most-visited page on the site.
