The complete cold plunge owner's checklist

Everything you need to build, maintain, and use your cold plunge safely. Print this page or bookmark it — these are the checklists every plunge owner needs.

Pre-build checklist

Before you start building your DIY cold plunge:

  • Read the master build guideDIY Cold Plunge Setup Guide
  • Read the safety guideCold Plunge Safety
  • Check medical clearance — get physician OK if you have any cardiovascular condition
  • Choose your vessel — stock tank, chest freezer, or pre-built tub (see comparison)
  • Size your chiller — use our chiller guide
  • Verify floor can handle 500+ lbs (water + your body weight)
  • Verify electrical circuit — 15-amp dedicated circuit with GFCI
  • Order all parts — see budget guide for full parts list
  • Plan 2 days for build — Saturday for plumbing/wiring, Sunday for testing

Build checklist

During the build:

  • Position vessel on level, load-rated surface
  • Install bulkhead fittings (drill 1-1/4" holes, seal with food-safe silicone)
  • Wait 24 hours for silicone cure
  • Add foam board insulation to sides and bottom
  • Install insulated cover
  • Mount chiller at or below waterline
  • Plumb chiller with 3/4" flexible PVC spa hose (never garden hose)
  • Install check valve on suction line
  • Wire Inkbird ITC-308 (plug into GFCI, plug chiller into "Cooling" outlet)
  • Drop temperature probe into water (mid-depth, away from chiller return)
  • Mount filter pump on separate loop
  • Plumb ozone generator into return line
  • Set Inkbird: target temp 50°F, compressor delay 3 min, alarms 55°F/35°F
  • Fill with tap water
  • Run for 24 hours to verify no leaks
  • Test water chemistry with 5-way strips
  • Add chlorine residual (1-2 ppm)
  • Verify floating thermometer matches Inkbird reading

Pre-session checklist

Before each plunge:

  • Verify water temperature with floating thermometer
  • Verify water is clear (not cloudy)
  • Verify water doesn't smell bad
  • Have warm layers ready (robe, beanie, socks)
  • Have warm drink ready (tea, broth)
  • Have towel laid out
  • Phone within reach (charged, emergency contacts set)
  • Buddy present (for first 5-10 sessions)
  • Drink 16oz of water
  • Empty stomach or 2+ hours since eating
  • Set timer for planned duration
  • Do 2 minutes of pre-entry breathwork

Weekly maintenance checklist

Every week (about 10 minutes total):

  • Monday: Test water with 5-way strips. Adjust pH if needed.
  • Mon/Wed/Fri: Run ozone generator 30 min (automatic timer)
  • Daily: Skim surface debris (if any)
  • Sunday: Inspect filter cartridge, hose off if dirty
  • Sunday: Verify water temp matches controller reading
  • Sunday: Visual inspection of all plumbing for leaks

Monthly maintenance checklist

Once per month:

  • Replace filter cartridge
  • Vacuum chiller condenser coils (improves efficiency)
  • Inspect all power cords for damage
  • Test GFCI outlet (press "Test" button, should trip)
  • Clean ozone generator injector nozzle
  • Lubricate filter pump O-rings with silicone grease
  • Inspect tub interior for cracks or biofilm

Quarterly maintenance checklist

Every 3 months:

  • Deep clean filter pump housing
  • Inspect bulkhead fittings for leaks
  • Replace ozone generator tubing (silicone degrades over time)
  • Verify chiller performance (cooling time from 60°F to 39°F)
  • Review and update your plunge log

Annual maintenance checklist

Once per year:

  • Replace ozone cell (output drops to 60-70% after 12-18 months)
  • Full drain, deep clean, and refill
  • Inspect and re-seal all plumbing connections
  • Replace any worn or cracked hoses
  • Re-calibrate Inkbird ITC-308 against floating thermometer
  • Update your emergency contact list

Drain and refill checklist

Every 4-6 months:

  • Turn off and unplug all equipment
  • Attach garden hose to drain fitting
  • Run hose to safe drain location (sanitary sewer or lawn — never storm drains)
  • Open drain valve (20-30 min for 50 gallons)
  • Spray interior with 10% bleach solution
  • Let sit 10 minutes
  • Scrub with microfiber cloth (never abrasive scrubbers)
  • Rinse thoroughly
  • Inspect bulkhead fittings, re-seal if needed
  • Replace filter cartridge
  • Close drain valve
  • Fill with tap water (4" below rim)
  • Run chiller and filter 1 hour to mix
  • Test water chemistry
  • Adjust pH to 7.2-7.8
  • Add chlorine to 1-2 ppm
  • Run ozone 30 min to sanitize fresh water

Winter preparation checklist

Before freezing weather:

  • Insulate all exposed plumbing (foam pipe insulation)
  • Verify filter pump runs continuously during freezing weather
  • Place drip tray under chiller for condensation
  • Have a drain plan for power outages (know where chiller drain plug is)
  • Stock up on warm layers for post-plunge rewarming
  • Reduce plunge duration by 30% for winter
  • If leaving for 48+ hours during freezing weather: drain the entire system
