The complete 2026 cold plunge safety checklist
Safety is the #1 priority for cold plunge practice. This checklist covers every safety consideration — from build to daily practice. Print this page and review it before every session for the first month.
Pre-build safety
- Get physician clearance (especially if 50+, cardiovascular conditions, or on medication)
- Review medication interactions (beta-blockers are contraindicated)
- Verify floor can handle 500+ lbs (50 gal water + body weight)
- Verify 15-amp dedicated circuit with GFCI protection
- Check local building codes for water-filled installations
- Read our complete safety guide
Build safety
- All electrical on GFCI outlets (mandatory, non-negotiable)
- Power cords routed above waterline (no dips where water pools)
- All plumbing pressure-tested before energizing chiller
- Food-safe silicone on all plumbing connections (not pipe dope)
- Check valve on suction line (prevents backflow)
- Chiller mounted on stable, level surface
- Anti-fatigue mat placed around tub (slip prevention)
- Non-slip surface verified
- Adequate lighting in plunge area
Pre-session safety (every session)
- Verify water temperature with independent thermometer
- Verify water is clear (not cloudy, no algae)
- Verify water doesn't smell bad
- Drink 16oz of water (hydration before plunge)
- Empty stomach or 2+ hours since eating
- No alcohol within 12 hours
- Warm layers ready (robe, beanie, socks)
- Towel laid out
- Phone within reach, charged, with emergency contacts
- Buddy present (for first 5-10 sessions, or when pushing colder)
- Timer set for planned duration
- 2 minutes of pre-plunge breathwork completed
During-session safety
- Enter slowly — never jump or dive
- Exhale as you enter (long, slow exhale through nose)
- Never submerge head during first 30 seconds
- Maintain continuous nasal breathing (don't hold breath)
- Use 4-6 breathing pattern (4-sec inhale, 6-sec exhale)
- If panic rises, extend exhale to 8 seconds
- Monitor for warning signs (see below)
Warning signs — EXIT IMMEDIATELY
⚠️ Exit immediately if you experience any of these
- Uncontrollable shivering (can't stop with breathwork)
- Numbness in fingers, toes, or face that doesn't resolve in 60 seconds
- Confusion, slurred speech, or unusual drowsiness
- Chest pain, pressure, or irregular heartbeat
- Shortness of breath beyond normal cold shock
- Loss of motor control (can't grip side of tub)
- Severe headache
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
Post-session safety
- Exit slowly (don't stand up too fast — blood pressure may drop)
- Towel off immediately
- Put on warm layers (robe, beanie, socks)
- Drink warm (not hot) fluids
- Don't rush to hot shower (let afterdrop work — 20-30 min)
- Light movement helps (walking, gentle stretching)
- Wait 30 minutes before strenuous activity
- Wait 60 minutes before driving (if you felt dizzy)
Contraindications — who should NOT cold plunge
⚠️ Do NOT cold plunge if you have any of these
- Cardiovascular disease (coronary artery disease, history of heart attack)
- Uncontrolled hypertension (above 160/100)
- Arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat)
- History of stroke or TIA
- Raynaud's syndrome or disease
- Pregnancy
- Recent surgery (within 6 weeks)
- Severe peripheral vascular disease
- Eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia)
- Epilepsy or seizure disorders
- Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
- Taking beta-blockers
- Children under 13
Special population safety
Adults 50+:
- Physician clearance mandatory
- Start at 60°F for 30 seconds
- Use warmer temps (50-55°F, not 39°F)
- Shorter durations (1-2 min, not 3-5)
- Always have buddy
- See our over-50 guide
Teenagers (13-17):
- Adult supervision required
- Limit to 55°F+ for under 2 minutes
- Physician clearance recommended
Pregnant women:
- Do NOT cold plunge during pregnancy
- Cold shock response can compromise placental blood flow
Electrical safety
- All components on GFCI outlets (test monthly)
- No extension cords if possible (if needed: 12-gauge outdoor-rated, under 25 ft)
- Power cords inspected monthly for damage
- Dedicated 15-amp circuit (don't share with refrigerator)
- Outdoor installations: weatherproof "in-use" covers
- Surge protector for chiller
Emergency procedures
If someone shows signs of moderate-to-severe hypothermia:
- Get them out of the water immediately
- Call 911 if confused, unconscious, or stopped shivering
- Remove wet clothing, dry them off
- Wrap in warm, dry layers (torso, neck, head first)
- Offer warm (not hot) fluids if conscious and alert
- Do NOT use hot water, heating pads, or vigorous massage
- Do NOT give alcohol
